ABOUT ALAN LIVERMORE

Exotic travels to Mexico, steam bending in the bush with the Anindilyakwa people on Groote Eylandt Northern Australia, playing with boat designs, sailing, surfing and exploring exotic timbers in Papua New Guinea, are just a few experiences that have shaped my passion and drive for exploring design as a solution to everyday living.

I divide my time between creating, designing, exploring new ideas and materials, with a background of working with Tasmanian speciality timbers with a skill set based on both solid and veneer.

There is a high level of craftsmanship, unique design and an emphasis on local materials and story. All materials are hand selected and the designs backed by a 40-year career of innovation and the pursuit of excellence.

Alan Livermore Designs, ALD, was established in 1996, following the sale of Kali Products a small business producing innovative executive desktop accessories aimed at the corporate and tourist markets. Kali Products still thrives today.

Prior to Kali products I was established and operating my own studio workshop in the peaceful commune of Waterworks, Cygnet Tasmania, developing furniture designs and then setting up Aspect Design in Salamanca Place, Hobart.

I relocated to Launceston in 1982, as it was then the hub of furniture manufacturing in Tasmania. I designed furniture for Fenton Timber Products and Tiffany Nu Steel. I also spent many years teaching at the University of Tasmania on the wood design course, plus the Craft in Education course. I was involved with the Australian School of Fine furniture, as a board member and a teacher.

All the while developing my own production designs and selling directly from my workshop and various outlets throughout Tasmania and Australia.

I design and make handcrafted, bespoke furniture, from small production runs, to individually designed pieces tailored to suit clients, businesses and the corporate world. These can range from, dining tables, sideboards, chairs, Boardroom tables, coffee tables, and beds.

Personal highlights have included my Pinot Wine Table as a gift from the Tasmanian Government to the Chinese President Hu Jintao, my Tasmanian Oak Demi Lune hall table purchased by Tetsuya Wakuda, and a Ute Hall Table purchased by Michel Roux Jr, another famous chef.

I operate out of my workshop in Invermay, and have working relationships with local artisans in metal, upholstery and major manufacturing.

Investing in good design is an investment in a lifestyle, Katie (my wife and business partner) and I are driven by the power of good design, which in turn transforms everyday living.

Our lead times depending on the order range is from 4-6 weeks.
